I have never understood how cats can mange to scatter litter that far and wide. Seems to be universal though!

All of those are why I don’t have a cat… well those and the fact that I can barely manage to clean up after myself, I don’t need to make it any harder.

And to think, those damn ancient Egyptians thought cats were cool.

The daily mess and by-products my two cats produce is astounding. On a tip, I recently switched from gravel type litter to wood pellets - no dust, and really, quite festive!

cats ARE cool. mine very graciously lets me share her apartment. :)
and as for the whole rufus-gender issue, i have a friend with 2 cats, both female : freud and earl. natch.

my old cat Lucy, who was a diabetic, used to love to sit in the litter box, only with her butt hanging out the wrong side of it. her condition contributed to weak kidneys, which in turned encouraged a copious urinary output. once i learned i couldn’t change her ways i instead got a large metal tray and placed the box in the middle of it. that way if she missed, the miss would at least be contained.

I love the idea of the uber-pan - I will implement it forthwith! meantime, for being masters of the stone-age world, ancient egyptians seem to have gotten snookered quite frequently. “No, it’s an honor to be buried alive with me!” “No, the dude with the dogface is really GOD!” “No, that animal that peed in the canopic jars is actually holy!” and that whole pyramid scheme? Really, I’m surprised they weren’t doing crystal therapy too. No wonder the romans kicked their ancient asses.

My sister bought a goofy little book as a Christmas present for me last year that was a spoof on cats writing in to an “advice cat” ala Dear Abby. The cats wrote in to complain about stupid things their owners did and the behaviors they used to show their displeasure, fear or other such negative reaction. I’ll have to check the name, (something about cats living with neurotic owners) but it had some interesting suggestions on why cats did those annoying things like not use their litter box the way we would like. The hooded box may be more of a problem than a comfort, depending on your cat—mostly due to trapping in smells but also because the cat can’t see her surroundings to know the she’s not going to be attacked while doing her business.
the most important thing I got out of the book was that there is only so much I can do to make my cats behave the way I want. Being adaptable is probably the most important quality in a cat owner. The key is to find the things that your cat would like modified. Good luck!
