The view from our roof is a beautiful, peaceful scene of a field to the west bordered by a split rail fence, with a lake-fed pond/marsh where the deer habitually stop for a drink and the frogs sing up a storm in the spring and summer, and a lovely maple bush up the hill to the west.
Yep—it’s all about the view, not about where you’re perched.

Thank you Dan, for sharing with us your view of the world, be it as small as an ornate hinge, as large as a mountain, or as vast as the twinkle in Zach’s eyes. In the coming year may you always be awed by the nature around you, may all your travels be safe, and if your view be impeded may it always be with something worthwhile. As you say it IS all about perspective - and yours is truly awesome!

well. it is already significantly preceding the asscrack of dawn out here in ma (pronounced MAAAAAHHHHH) and can i say that, beyond travelling 7500 miles in the space of 5 days, the very worst thing about this particular holiday season is that YOU AND I WERE 20 MILES APART AND I DIDN’T KN0W AND DIDN’T GET TO MEET YOU ? (i was in d.c. until 3 pm today. big academic conference thingey.)
anyway, i’m sure you’re having fun with family and friends in maryland, whatever, but i just want to say - and mind you, this is highly motivated by intensive fatigue, delayed planes, competitive colleagues, snippy interviews and other recent events - BALLS.
happy new year. feh.

i live within a few miles of the base Mt. Diablo and it has been in my backyard for all but four years of my life. and not just as a bump on the horizon, but as an imposing presence. some of my best memories of boy scout camping trips and thrilling bike ride decents with friends took place on this hunk of rock. and the view—oh yeah. nothing like it on a clear day. thanks Dan! and a belated happy new year to you, Kel and Zach.
